Why won't Windows 11 open HEIC files?
Windows 11 can't display HEIC out of the box. To open them in the Photos app it needs two Microsoft Store add-ons: HEIF Image Extensions (free) and HEVC Video Extensions — and the HEVC one usually costs $0.99. Until both are installed, double-clicking a .heic file shows an error or a blank thumbnail.
Even after paying for the codec, plenty of older programs, work apps, and upload forms still reject HEIC and only take JPG. Converting to JPG once fixes it everywhere.
Getting iPhone photos onto your PC (and why they're still HEIC)
However you moved them across — a USB cable (This PC → iPhone → DCIM), iCloud for Windows, or email — they often arrive as .HEIC. That's because the photo was shot in HEIC; switching your iPhone to Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible only changes future photos, not ones already taken.
